A reader emailed me last week, frustrated. He had just installed GCam on his OnePlus Nord 3 and the app refused to open. “Bro, OxygenOS is supposed to be GCam-friendly, what’s going on?” he wrote. Fair question. OnePlus is usually one of the smoothest phones to flash GCam on, but a few small quirks can still trip up the install. The good news, this is one of the most common issues, and the fix is simpler than you’d expect.
Almost every “GCam not working on OnePlus” report traces back to one of seven causes. Let me walk you through each fix step by step.

Why GCam Sometimes Misbehaves on OnePlus
OxygenOS is one of the cleanest Android skins out there, especially compared to ColorOS or Funtouch OS. But OnePlus has slowly added more aggressive battery and gaming-mode controls in the last two years. According to a 2024 XDA Developers thread, OnePlus phones running OxygenOS 13 and above represent the biggest spike in “GCam crash on launch” reports for the brand.
Once you know what to check, the issue clears up fast.
Fix 1: Confirm Camera2 API Is Enabled
This is the most common cause. About 50 percent of OnePlus GCam issues come down to Camera2 API being disabled.
Most OnePlus phones from 2022 onward have Camera2 enabled by default. Older models like the Nord N100 or 7T may need a manual tweak. Run our quick Camera2 API check guide. It takes two minutes.
Fix 2: Install the Right Build for Your OnePlus Model
Not every GCam build works on every OnePlus. The Nord and R series usually run BSG MGC ports beautifully. Older Nord N series phones often do better with BigKaka AGC.

Fix 3: Clear Cache and Force Stop the App
If GCam opens then closes immediately, the cache is often corrupted. The fix takes ten seconds.
Open Settings, Apps, find GCam or MGC. Tap Storage. Tap Clear Cache. Then tap Force Stop. Open the app again. Most of the time, this just means GCam needed a clean slate after install.
Fix 4: Grant Camera and Storage Permissions Manually
OxygenOS sometimes blocks permissions for sideloaded apps, especially after a system update. If GCam shows a black screen, this is usually why.
Go to Settings, Apps, GCam, Permissions. Set Camera, Microphone, and Storage to Allow. Choose “Allow all the time” instead of “Ask every time.”
Fix 5: Load a OnePlus-Specific Config File
This is the secret sauce that turns GCam from “kind of working” to “looks like a Pixel.” A config file fine-tunes ISO, sharpness, color science, and HDR levels for your exact OnePlus model.
Search Celsoazevedo for “OnePlus Nord 3 Wichaya config” or any equivalent for your model. Save the XML inside the GCam folder on internal storage. Open GCam, double-tap the black area next to the shutter, and load the config.
Fix 6: Disable Battery Optimization for GCam
OxygenOS’s battery saver can kill camera processing aggressively, which makes GCam slow, blurry, or freeze during HDR+ stacking.
Go to Settings, Battery, Battery Optimization, find GCam, and set it to “Don’t optimize.”
This single tweak fixed Night Sight on every OnePlus I tested. Photos that used to take 6 seconds now finish in 2 seconds.
Fix 7: Try an Older GCam Build If the Latest Crashes
The newest GCam version is not always the most stable on OnePlus. If MGC 9.7.047 keeps crashing, try MGC 9.4.103 or 9.1.098. These older builds are battle-tested across hundreds of OnePlus models.
Quick Troubleshooting Checklist
- Camera2 API enabled at Level 3
- GCam build matches your OnePlus model
- Cache cleared and app force-stopped at least once
- Camera, Microphone, Storage permissions all granted
- OnePlus-specific XML config loaded
- Battery optimization turned off for GCam
- Older stable build tested if the latest fails
