What Night Sight Actually Does
Night Sight is Google’s low-light stacking mode. It captures multiple frames (typically 6 to 15) over 2 to 6 seconds, aligns them, and merges them to lift shadows without amplifying noise. According to Google’s 2018 AI Blog post that introduced the feature, it can produce usable photos at light levels as low as 0.3 lux, which is roughly moonlight.
Step 1: Install GCam with Night Sight Support

Step 2: Open Night Sight Mode
Open GCam, then swipe between the modes at the bottom until you reach “Night Sight.” On some builds it shows as a moon icon. Tap it.
Step 3: Hold Steady for 2-6 Seconds
This is the part most beginners miss. Tap the shutter and stay still. The phone shows a countdown bar. The darker the scene, the longer the capture. In very dark rooms it can run to 6 seconds. Move and you lose detail.
A tripod or resting your hands on a stable surface helps a lot. For pure-handheld shots, brace your elbows against your body.
Step 4: Wait for Processing
Once the capture finishes, GCam takes another 2 to 4 seconds to process. The final photo looks dramatically brighter than the live preview. That is normal. The magic happens during processing.
Pro Tips for Better Night Sight Photos
- Tap a key part of the scene to set focus before pressing the shutter
- Use a 2 second timer so your tap does not shake the phone

- Disable battery optimization for GCam so processing does not stall
